Proven Solutions Based On Scientific Research


Our dedicated R&D unit is testament to our commitment to providing clients with proven solutions based on scientific research. TCM R&D is pushing the boundaries of invasive weed management by working at the cutting edge of science and technology to pioneer ecologically sensitive, cost-effective solutions. Scientific studies are conducted within a dynamic working environment to develop, refine and implement targeted methodologies. In addition to solving problems, TCM R&D provides a flow of up-to-date information and serves as a valuable forum for the exchange of news and data concerning vegetation management and conservation issues from around the world

TCM R&D has been awarded funding through the UK Government Department of Trade & Industry for the Knowledge Transfer Partnership arrangement with Writtle College, Essex.  The project has lasted for two and a half years and is now drawing to a close.  It has examined and learnt more about the biology and physiology of Japanese knotweed and learnt about the criteria required to understand whether the plant's rhizomes are dead or dormant.  Outputs are a rhizome viability test that works on site and a better understanding about how the starches move through the plant at different times of its growth cycle, giving us better understanding about optimum times and methods of herbicide application.

Since 2005, our visiting researcher based at University of  Bath has worked on Japanese knotweed physiology and biology.  Outputs include a 99.9% definitive laboratory based rhizome viability test that is currently being prepared for peer review in a scientific journal, and evidence to support successful burial and soil encapsulation methodology.  Preliminary work has been undertaken to develop new herbicides that we hope will offer a more environmentally friendly option for treatment of Japanese knotweed.
