Learn about invasive weeds and the solutions for eradication that are available

TCM’s Total Aquatic Weed Service

At TCM we can now provide longer term solutions to invasive aquatic weed problems through the addition of specialist amphibious vehicle equipment, which can cut and clear aquatic weed debris, to our portfolio of HIT system solutions.

When combined with herbicide treatment and remediation of the water body, a complete solution that allows biodiversity to return and minimises flood risk is available.

There is a growing need to control aquatic weeds which are invading our waterways, ponds and lakes, stifling water flow, causing flooding and stagnation and destroying biodiversity in the UK’s wetland areas. Some of the most invasive weeds such as floating pennywort and parrots feather have been introduced into the UK within the past 50 years and are rapidly spreading.

In 2005, the Centre for Aquatic Plant Management stated in their work plan:

“It is estimated that operational agencies spend approximately £35 million per year on aquatic plant management, with a further £15 million spent by individual organisations and riparian owners. These costs could increase by up to 50% in the next 10 years because of loss of pesticides, the effects of alien species and vegetation changes due to global warming, and increased costs of alternative techniques.”

Sites are assessed on an individual basis and a solution is provided to give customers results in the timescales and budget required.

Howard Downer, TCM’s managing director says: “this is an exciting development for our customers. There are very few companies out there who can combine the expertise of use of herbicides in water with the mechanical clearance of debris. In addition, to be able to offer remediation of the site through UK Wetlands gives our customers the best possible chance of overcoming the problems that invasive aquatic weeds cause.”

TCM is an Amenity Assured, ISO 9001, ISO14001 and OHAS 18001 accredited invasive weed management company. We operate throughout the UK and provide a full range of invasive weed and ecology services to the construction industry, councils and private land owners.
