Mechanical Removal of Japanese Knotweed is Developers’ Preferred Option for 2010

Since the start of 2010, almost 60% of Japanese knotweed eradication work that we have undertaken has been through the implementation of the mechanical options that we offer, such as soil screening. This reflects a shift in the market towards a need for fast turnaround of sites once it has been decided that development will go ahead.

In the current economic climate, we have found that our clients need a quick, effective and sustainable option where the final date can be firmly built into their project’s timeline. Soil screening meets all of these criteria and this type of eradication programme will also work in all but the most difficult of weather conditions, avoiding the delay that can often be necessary when it is too late in the growing season to implement a herbicide programme that will be successful for that same year.

Japanese knotweed eradication has been successfully achieved at the Dolcoath site, Camborne and on the Olympic Park site through winter/spring periods using this method. In the case of sites that we are working on in Glasgow in preparation for the Commonwealth Games in 2014, our clients can be sure that Japanese knotweed won’t hold up their project end dates. On one of these sites, we screened and removed in excess of 6,000m³ of Japanese knotweed infested soil within 2 weeks.
