This involves the production of standardised maps of vegetation structure along 500 metre stretches of river that provide a detailed outline of the physical habitat available for aquatic animals along with a botanical survey of all vascular plants recorded in each stretch.
Since most animal species are mobile, small and fugitive, they are much more difficult to observe and record during the short period in which the survey is carried out. Therefore the potential of the habitats to support protected species is recorded and rated which informs the requirement for further survey works.
This involves a walk over of the site the production of a GIS drawing and report about the area which identifies areas where there are infestations. The survey forms the basis of the design for methodology of control or eradication.
